What is a Partition Wall?

A partition wall is a non-load bearing wall. They can be constructed from various materials including glass, timber, steel, glass, brick etc.

They are used for a variety of reasons, the main one being to separate a large space into smaller spaces.

Because partition walls are not load-bearing they can be light weight and cheaper than a load bearing wall. Some of the different types have options for relocation or flexibility following installation.

Types of Partition Walls for Offices

At Tapper Interiors we can offer various types of partition walls, our most popular types are

  • Metal Framed Stud Walls
  • Glass Partition Walls

Metal Framed Stud Walls

This is our most popular type of partition wall used for offices or any indoor space.

Years ago, every partition wall was the same. They all consisted of a 50mm or 70mm frame with plasterboards either side and that was a job done. These days they are far more complex; although the basic principle is the same.

Types of Insulation for Partition Walls

In recent years soundproofing and privacy have become higher in demand. Since then, there has been a development in insulation available for use in partition walls to help with soundproofing. There are different types depending on budget and acoustic need.

  • 25mm isowool is the standard insulation
  • 50mm isowool provides better insulation and is the most popular choice
  • Then for a really good acoustics we have the Rockwood batt. This is much denser and provides a top solution for soundproofing your partition wall.
  • For added security, we could also include a sercurity lathe. This is a metal mesh which is embedded into the wall. The idea being that if someone tried to break into the room buy knocking holes in the wall they wouldn’t get very far. This is for use in high security facilities and not recommended for office etc.

Types of Framing for Partition Walls

The metal frames have also altered over the years. We now have different types available for use in a partition wall;

  • C studs – in the shape of a C
  • I studs – in the shape of a I when looking from above
  • Acoustic studs – which help contribute to the overall acoustics of the partition

The metal frames are also available in different thicknesses depending on your requirements. 50mm, 70mm, 90mm, 146mm – the 146mm is usually used for jobs with the higher ceilings.

Types of Plasterboard for Partition Walls
